NJ Governor Signs Law To Legalize Sports Betting

January 18, 2012

On Tuesday, January 17, Governor Chris Christie signed legislation which will pave the way for legalized sports wagering in New Jersey. In order to make expanded gaming a reality in NJ, the state will have to challenge the federal ban which only allows sports gambling in Nevada, Delaware, Oregon and Montana.

“New Jersey voters made it clear they want sports betting, and this law will handle it in a responsible and professional manner,” the article has quoted state Assemblyman Ralph Caputo as saying. “It does the right thing for New Jersey and will ensure our racetracks and casinos remain competitive.”

“This is a well-thought-out plan that allows New Jersey to take advantage of this revenue opportunity,” said Burzichelli, D-Salem, Gloucester, Cumberland. “Let’s face it — sports betting is already taking place, but the only people taking advantage of it are the bookies and criminal enterprises.”

The report also explains that on Tuesday, Governor Christie also signed the bill which will see a pilot program implemented where handicappers will be able to place bets on horse races via electronic terminals in bars or restaurants in the northern and central parts of the state.
